Gold is a metal, pyrite and mica are not, so see what your metal detector has to say! However, keep in mind that the detector won't always detect flakes because they're so small.

Read MoreIn order to separate the gold from other metals, chemicals such as cyanide solution or mercury are introduced to the gold. This process causes the gold to coagulate, and form nuggets and clumps of gold. Another process of removing impurities out of gold is to place the gold ore in a crucible. Put the crucible in a gold melting machine.
